Today marked our first major planting session since we moved house. I’ve added a few plants here and there but this weekend we have done a B&M visit (very cheap but time will tell on the quality) and an RHS Bridgewater trip.
I’ve replaced some favourites that didn’t survive the move and/or winter – Senetti, aquilegia, scabious. And added a few new plants – dianthus Shirley Temple, a couple of osteospermums and a butterfly lavender. I’ve had the osteospermums before but they never last long. Fingers crossed for these.
It’s hard to explain how much this has lifted our spirits. It was a tough year last year, knowing we were moving but no clarity on when so we didn’t plant anything new. Then we moved in September so it’s been a long six months of autumn and winter. It’s so restorative to be out in the sunshine helping our new charges start their journeys with us.
It sounds a bit odd but I truly feel responsible for these plants, I connect very strongly with the process of growing and caring for them so it feels so good to be thinking of myself as a plant guardian again.

Oh and for anyone from Six On Saturday, what I thought might be Hollyhocks are actually Japanese anemones which thrills me no end. I bought a planter with me and I’m so happy to find more growing in the ground!!!
