Six On Saturday – 29 March 2025

Come and join us for Six On Saturday. Our host Jim can be found here, and the guidelines for taking part are here. Very simple, six photos of things in your garden (or elsewhere) this week. It’s been a nice week here in the North West, a little cold but quite a few sunny days and not too much rain. I’ve started to go out for 10 minutes during my lunch break again – it’s a huge lift to my mental health to be able to get out into the garden at this time of year when everything is emerging. Feels like a new start for the garden and me.

The tulips are starting to open but sadly I seem to have lost all the photos I took last year while planting to tell me which variety went into which plot. This is possibly the variety Ice Cream which I definitely purchased but I think it needs to open a little more for me to be sure.

Another tulip variety – I’m excited for this one as it looks like it might be a Parrot variety (looks a bit wrinkly on the edges!).

This is my first time growing Muscari and I’m really pleased with them. I think I might put the bulbs out into the edges of the grass when they’re done to grow alongside the bluebells next year.

My beloved Snake’s Head Fritillary bulbs are in full flower. I actually only found this pot during the week. We had moved all the pots off the patio at the beginning of March to have it jet washed and I thought I’d moved back all the spring bulbs but this one escaped me and I was so excited when I found it nestling amongst a bunch of pots that are full of sycamore seedlings (which will be disposed of soon!).

The cherry blossoms continue to appear. This is one of my favourite spring photos – there’s something magical about that pink against the blue sky.

The hosta is returning – I have no idea of the variety, as it was given to me several years ago by a friend. I think this might be its last year in this pot and I will move it to a new home at the end of the summer. I’ll be topping it up with gravel very soon to deter the slugs. This plant (and its companion) seem to not be very tasty at this stage and it’s only much later on that the slugs come along and chomp on the leaves but you can’t be too careful. I love the alien look they have – like giant worms pushing out of the soil.

That’s all for this week. Hopefully we’ll get the hedges sorted this week and a mass de-helicoptoring is planned for Monday. See you next week.

  1. Do you ever eat your Hosta shoots? I am not a hugs fan of hosytas, but they apparently have the redeeming quality of tasting like asparagus. I have one on the side of my house I may consider eating…

My muscari are just greening up now but should begin to bloom in a week or two, I guess. I have been encouraging them in my mixed hedge area and they grow along the side of the house. I have a dwarf weeping cherry. I had favored a pink one but I love the simple single flowers. Alas, my garden center had only whit in the single flowers. It is still pretty, and will be blooming in about two weeks.
