I didn’t post last week as I feared my Six Green Things theme could only really be stretched to one blog post. But this week due to a lot of rain there are a lot of flowers out there again. I’ve also included the start of a a BIG project we’ve just undertaken. This is going to get its own page on my The Garrett Garden blog when it’s complete but I wanted to share a few of the early photos here as it’s been the biggest change in the garden so far this month.
After 12 months of living here, we have finally put into motion the plan to remove the two hideous pine trees that blight our garden and all the surrounding gardens (I feel like our neighbours might throw us a party when the trees are gone, such has been the joy I’ve witnessed when I warned them of the trees impending departure).
So first step was remove the shed (a former pigeon coop) which still contained a lot of junk from the previous inhabitant of our house. Next step will be to move the extremely large pile of roof tiles we found behind the shed. Then in a few weeks the trees will be removed (our closest neighbour will be taking all the suitable wood for her log burner).
Anyway, here are a few photos of the project so far, then five more entries to round out my six this week. As ever, thanks to our host Jim – please visit his blog and join in with Six On Saturday.
So, onto the more attractive parts of the garden this week.
This fuschia looked like it was on its last legs only a couple of weeks ago but it’s rallied and put on a glorious display of flowers this week. I used to have an abundance of fuschia but this is the only one this year, something I may have to rectify next year.
I have had a bit of a fixation with dahlias this year. I think I have about 10 or 12 plants dotted around the garden. Some from forgotten tubers and some from newly acquired plants this year. This is one of the new ones, and I noticed the strange variation on the petals this week – just one bloom on the plant looks like this, the rest are the same as the one in the background.
The Zinnia are in full flow now. Despite me forgetting to thin them out earlier in the year, they seem quite happy all cosy together in the pot. I love the colours of this variety so much.
Antirrhinum Dazzling Lips Pink. One of the few things in the garden that I remembered to take a picture of the label. These were a rescue plant – I think it cost all of one pound. It was very sickly looking for a couple of weeks but has now decided that it’s time to shine.
This is Gaura Butterfly Apple Blossom. Bought purely to add some late colour as its label states it flowers from August to October and here it is – it stubbornly refused to flower in August but the minute the sun went away it has begun to treat us to these glorious delicate little blooms.

Some stunning plants! I really love the zinnias. I’ve also been surprised this year by how happy many plants are to grow very close together. I’m not at all good at thinning, but it hasn’t been a problem.

Wow, your project is extensive! But it looks like you’re well underway and it sounds like your plans are solid. The blooms are lovely, particularly that gorgeous, unique Dahlia!
